Revisions

The Assignment:

When turning in a final draft, we are all guilty at one point or another of getting lazy and rushing through the last stretch just to get it over with. Most of us will re read it and fix spelling mistakes and some grammatical errors, or at least I hope so, for this is the most basic type of revision. This type of revision hardly even scratches the surface of the paper’s mistakes. There are so many more strategies for improving your paper and making sure you are justly maximizing your work. You will soon learn how to do this. For this assignment the goal is to become skilled at how to make a truly significant, thoroughgoing, and effective revision.

Procedures:

First, you are going to want to take one of your old or current papers that you think you have completely finished and are ready to turn in, if you haven’t already done so. This will be the paper that you are going to revise in the ways you learn. Given the different circumstances, every assignment is unique and they all ask something different. However, you will be able to use these revision methods to apply to all types of writings whether it’s an analysis or an opinion paper. So even people who don’t like writing for school and prefer the creative writing that is hardly ever assigned, will be able to use these methods. Say for example, we are dealing with a paper where you are giving your opinion, as this is a very common style of writing. Whether the paper is a review of a movie or story where you state you opinion, or an analysis that you combine with your opinion, you are trying to persuade the audience to agree with you, but why should they?

Start off by putting yourself in the shoes of someone else. Once you have done this, reread your paper and ask yourself how persuading and transparent it is? It mustn’t only make sense to you, but to everyone who reads it. Therefore proceed by identifying your audience, because chances are you haven’t already done so. Your Audience should be, whomever you are trying to influence and persuade with this paper. While still remaining in the mindset of someone else, ask yourself what makes you agree with this paper and share the same point of view. An Enthymeme is a blend of Rhetoric that makes a clear declaration that suggests a common principle. You must make logic of your argument within this point of view. You need to use strategies to persuade your audience that your belief is vital. So make sure you have tactics that do so. Strategies can be facts or opinions that highlight your topics exigence.

Evaluating Your Product:

Your Exigence is basically the point you are trying to make and the urgency level you are using to go about it. According to Bitzer, your exigence should be prone to change by discussion. For example in my WRIT 1133 project # 3 I talk about Americas addiction with pain pills. By stating that that the death rate for pill abuse is skyrocketing, significantly going up every year I am able to speak to my audience and inform them of my concerns. This allows them to understand my distress level and get on the same page as me. My audience is categorized as people who are interested in the topic by pure chance, perhaps because they want to know more, or don’t know anything yet, and also as people who have been affected by this. These people include addicts, relatives of addicts, et cetera. In my project # 3, this is my audience, and they are the people I am trying to persuade to share my viewpoint and act with me. I persuade them by using rhetoric that explains the harmfulness of prescription pain pills. Within this rhetoric, my argument makes sense and proposes a worldview.

Next, your Rhetoric must be clear to your audience so that they understand it and can relate to it. Rhetoric is a very potent mechanism that is used to argue and plead your case. The Rhetoric is stimulated by the capability of the audience to identify with the Rhetor and vice-versa. The audience and the Rhetor ought to have a matching comprehension of the case being made in order for it to be of use. Once you have constructed your rhetoric and your paper or presentation clearly communicates its idea to the audience, you will have really revised your work. Lastly, make sure that your paper is in an appropriate order in order to strengthen it. For example, such as in my WRIT 1133 Project # 3 have a clear thesis at the beginning of your paper or presentation. Having done these steps, the reader will be able to clearly define the main focus of the paper (the argument) and will also be able to make sense of it. By abiding to this criterion, not only will your grade improve significantly, but you will also make a stronger argument and a more persuasive paper.
