The Design Game

Design- to find the form that best achieves the composition’s purpose
In order, to make sure the design process moves along you first have to come up with a purpose. There are many different forms to choose but without a purpose, those forms are useless.
Purpose- in this case, to communicate an interpretation of Plato, in all its depth and complexity
With your purpose decided, you can guide your design into which will best embrace that purpose.
Form-the arrangement of the individual elements making up composition
Think about what medium best encompasses the idea. Everyone’s medium will be different pertaining to his or her separate skills. You can do a PowerPoint, picture, piece of music, essay, or poem; anything that you feel encompasses this work.
Once you have the purpose and the form, now the game is the design. What form is the best to emphasize the purpose? How can you use the form to best push across your meaning?
Let’s look at an example project. I had my students last year create an abstract representation of Plato’s Gorgias. Now students immediately thought this was challenging, because both the purpose and the form were free to their interpretation. This student immediately connected the book to a game of chess and revolved his project around that. This student’s purpose was to portray the complexity of arguments and mazes used in Gorgias to show an unfair chess game mastered by those who had mastered the art.

This was his one of his final interpretations, see how he incorporated his purpose into a picture. You can see the subtleties of his point; a rigged game with the orator(represented in black) set-up to win. As you have all read the book, what are some other subtleties you see implemented by the student?

One final thing point, I would like to leave you with is to be creative, but whatever medium you use. Be sure to check online and see some tips from experts in the field. If you look back at the picture you can see the student used the rule of thirds which was brought up during class. This rule makes his project look much more defined and official.
